SUMMARY:Racism in Medicine – Finding Your Voice
DESCRIPTION:What makes you unique? Your voice\, sharing your experience and learning from the journeys of others. Join us as we discover the importance of finding your voice in speaking against racism in medicine by understanding the perspective of others\, knowing the cost of gender and racial discrimination\, and the importance of eliminating microaggressions and gender disparity in the workplace and in the medical community. \nCheryl Jean-Paul joined the Spartans as the women’s basketball head coach in 2010.\nSince coming to TWU\, Jean-Paul has built the Spartans program into a perennial playoff contender. Internationally\, Jean-Paul was most recently the head coach of Canada’s FIBA U16/U17 Cadette Women’s National Team from 2018-2022\, finishing as a top 4 at the U17 World Championships in Hungary. Jean-Paul\, who graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science degree\, also has her Chartered Professional Coach designation and has been recognized for her coaching abilities by being awarded the Canada West Coach of the Year in 2018. She has more recently completed her Advanced Coaching Diploma\, International Coaching Certificate with the CSI-Pacific and graduated with a Master’s in Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University. Speaking engagements have included coaching symposiums\, leadership and mentorship programs on topics such as transformational coaching\, women in sport\, leadership\, racism in sport\, equity and inclusion. \n\nCheryl Jean-Paul\nHead Coach\, TWU Women’s Basketball\nBSc\, MA in Leadership\, ChPC \nThis session will… \n\nDiscuss racial bias\, anti-racism and microaggressions in the workplace.\nProvide an understanding of intersectionality and the role of gender bias.\nCommunicate the importance of knowing the difference between equality and equity.\nProvide opportunities to learn and advocate by finding one’s voice.\nGroup discussion and brainstorming
